DOUBle Knowledge

Olivia Bax (b. 1988, Singapore) lives and works in London. Bax received her MFA Sculpture from Slade School of Fine Art, University College London (2016) and her BA (Hons) Fine Art from Byam Shaw School of Art, London (2010).

Bax’s current work ponders the convergence of organic and human made structures. In a search for new perspectives via inversion within her own process, Bax’s recent sculptural works are constructed outside-in. The solid sections, hand generated pulp moulded with paint and chicken wire, are built first. The welded armature is then shaped around the solids, caging them in rather than playing its traditional role of scaffold or skeleton. Made from slicing open an old sculpture ‘Meander Scar’ refers to a geological feature formed by the remnants of a dried rogue water tributary, the reformation of a void.

Selected solo exhibitions include: ‘Home Range’, Holtermann Fine Art, London (2022), ‘Spill, L21’, Palma de Mallorca, Spain (2022) Pah-d'-Bah, HS Projects, London (2021), ‘Off Grid, Mark Tanner Sculpture Award Exhibition, Standpoint Gallery, London / Cross Lane Projects, Kendal / Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, Penzance (2020/21),’Chute’, RIBOT arte contemporanea, Milan (2019/20), ‘Roost’, Lily Brooke, London (2018), ‘at large’, VO Curations at 93 Baker Street, London (2018), ‘ZEST’, FOLD Gallery, London (2016/17), ‘Unfurled’, The Foundry Gallery at David Le Lay Architects, London (2012), ‘Structural Shift’, MoorHouse, London (2011).
